4 Israelis arrested in Brazil on drug trafficking charges

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Dec. 14, 2002

SAO PAULO, Brazil

Police in Brazil's biggest city arrested four Israeli citizens for allegedly trafficking a large amount of LSD and smaller amounts of other drugs.

Acting on an anonymous phone call, police found 26,000 doses of the hallucinogenic drug LSD, 78 tablets of the clubbing drug ecstasy and US$28,000 in cash in the men's apartment in the posh Sao Paulo neighborhood of Jardins.

"We don't know yet how they managed to get the drugs into the country," local police chief Nair Andrade told television cameras.

Police believe the drugs came from Amsterdam and were destined for sale in Sao Paulo's club scene. Police did not reveal the identity of the four Israeli men.

Drug seizures have increased in southern Brazil and Sao Paulo in recent months. The 18-million Sao Paulo metropolitan area is the epicenter of Latin America's electronic music and club scene where an increasing amount of synthetic drugs are consumed.
