IsraelWire, August 10th, 1999:

Israel among the leaders in pirated computer software

(IsraelWire-8/10-1999) According to experts, nine out of ten Israeli homes are using illegally copied or pirated computer software, a figure that is alarming software manufacturers around the world. The BSI consumer watchdog organization estimated the figures in the workplace; military bases and other commercial users of software are equally alarming.

Attorney Ami Fleisher, who represents the interests of Microsoft in BSI, the trend also exists in government offices and other public facilities as well. Fleisher points out that a software package may be purchased with a license for ten computers but in reality, it will be used in 30 to 40 computers.

"Without a license for each computer, the software is being used illegally," points out Fleisher.

In the meantime, BSI continues is battle against the use of illegal software and has reported receiving thousands of reported incidents via its hotline number ( 1-800-501-111 ). The hotline will continue operating even when the Channel 2 Television ad campaign against pirated software has ended.

Despite the widespread use of software without individual licenses, officials report that the use of illegally copies programs has dropped from 54 percent in 1997 to 48 percent in 1998.
