Majority of New Immigrants Are Non-Jews

12/12/2001

(IsraelNationalNews.com) Addressing the Knesset Immigration & Absorption Committee on Tuesday, Minister of the Interior (Shas) Eli Yishai reported that 70% of new immigrants arriving in Israel over the past year were non-Jews. Yishai is calling for legislation that would amend the Law of Return regarding grandchildren whom are not Jews.

The head of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Sallai Meridor expressed adamant opposition to the move along with MKs of new immigrant parties and the political left. Meridor stated that any change in the Law of Return would negatively impact future immigration and have widespread ramifications.
